Biomedical Sharps

(a) human anatomical waste, (b) human blood waste, (c) animal anatomical waste, (d) animal blood waste, (e) microbiology laboratory waste, (f) sharps waste, (g) cytotoxic waste, (h) waste that has come into contact with human blood waste that is infected or suspected of being infected with any infectious substance (human), or (i) a waste containing or derived from one or more wastes described in clauses (a) through (h), but does not include, (j) domestic waste, (k) animal anatomical waste or animal blood waste disposed of in accordance with, (i) the Meat Inspection Act (Canada), (ii) the Health of Animals Act (Canada), (iii)the Health Protection and Promotion Act, (iv) the Food Safety and Quality Act, 2001, or (v) the Nutrient Management Act, 2002. (m) treated biomedical waste, or (n) dialysis waste not saturated with blood or blood products that is tubing, filters, towels or disposable sheets. “sharps waste” means blades, needles, syringes, including safety engineered needles, laboratory glass, or other materials capable of causing punctures or cuts and which have come into contact with human blood waste, animal blood waste or other animal or human bodily fluids.

Chemical Waste

Hazardous wastes are wastes that, when present in quantities and concentrations that are high enough, pose a threat to human health or the environment if they are improperly stored, transported, treated or disposed. To manage hazardous wastes appropriately, there must be systematic control of how they are collected, stored, transported, treated, recovered and disposed. Under Ontario law (Regulation 347), hazardous wastes include: Listed waste Listed wastes include wastes from industrial processes, waste chemicals and severely toxic wastes. A listed waste is defined as:

• an acute hazardous waste chemical
• a hazardous industrial waste
• a hazardous waste chemical
• severely toxic waste

Pharmaceutical

“pharmaceutical” means, subject to subsection (2), a drug within the meaning of section 2 of the Food and Drugs Act (Canada) that is sold to consumers in Ontario, whether it is sold by the producer of the pharmaceutical or by another person, and includes a natural health product within the meaning of the Natural Health Products Regulations made under that Act; (“produit pharmaceutique”) This includes Pharmaceuticals that are dispensed, yet not fully used.
